Newcomer Tax FAQs

Do I need to file a Canadian tax return if I just arrived?
Yes. Once you establish residency in Canada, you are required to file a T1 tax return for the year you arrived — even if you only worked for part of the year. Filing also unlocks benefits like the CCB and GST/HST credit.
How do I report income earned before arriving in Canada?
Foreign income earned before your date of arrival is generally not taxable in Canada. We include your world income on a special schedule to calculate benefit eligibility, but foreign pre-arrival income is typically exempt from Canadian tax.
What documents do I need for my first Canadian tax return?
You'll need your SIN, T4 slips from Canadian employers, your immigration documents showing your arrival date, any foreign income statements, and receipts for deductible expenses (medical, childcare, tuition, etc.).
When is the tax filing deadline for newcomers?
The standard Canadian tax deadline is April 30th. If you or your spouse are self-employed, the deadline extends to June 15th — but any taxes owing are still due April 30th to avoid interest charges.
Does AppleTreeTax handle returns for refugees and asylum seekers?
Yes. We assist newcomers with all immigration statuses, including refugees, protected persons, and temporary residents. Our Advisors are familiar with the nuances of each immigration category as they apply to Canadian tax law.
