Trades-Specific Deductions

Every Deduction a Contractor Deserves

🔧

Tools & Equipment

Tools costing up to $500 are immediately deductible. Larger equipment is claimed via CCA (Capital Cost Allowance) over time. We optimize your CCA claims each year.

🚛

Vehicle & Travel

Your truck, van, or work vehicle — fuel, insurance, maintenance, and CCA on the vehicle itself. We calculate the correct business-use percentage.

🧱

Materials & Supplies

Job materials, consumables, safety equipment, PPE, and site supplies are all deductible business expenses when properly documented.

👷

Subcontractors

Amounts paid to subcontractors are deductible business expenses. We ensure T4As are issued correctly and deductions are claimed properly.

🏠

Home Office & Storage

If you run your business from home — storing materials, doing estimates, managing invoices — a portion of your housing costs is deductible.

🎓

Apprenticeship Tax Credit

Employers who hire eligible apprentices in Red Seal trades can claim a 10% federal tax credit (up to $2,000 per apprentice per year). We make sure you don’t miss it.

Common Questions

Contractor Tax FAQs

I was paid by T4A — am I self-employed?
Yes. A T4A means the payer treated you as a self-employed contractor, not an employee. You file a T2125 business income schedule with your T1, which allows you to deduct all eligible business expenses — tools, vehicle, materials, and more.
Do I need to charge HST/GST on my invoices?
If your gross revenue from construction and contracting services exceeds $30,000 in a rolling 12-month period, you must register for HST/GST and charge it on invoices. We handle your registration and quarterly/annual HST returns.
What records should I keep for tools?
Keep all receipts for tool and equipment purchases, noting the date, cost, and business purpose. For tools under $500, keep the receipt and we deduct it immediately. For major equipment, we set up the CCA schedule and track it year-over-year.
